Laureato in letteratura inglese all'università di Cambridge. Fa 3 anni di tirocinio alla TV Granada con l'intenzione di passare al teatro. Sposato con Bernice Stegers con la quale ha avuto 3 figlie. Ha ricevuto Honorary Doctorate of Arts dall'Università di Lincoln. La figlia Lizzie lavora per l'Agenzia Indipendente ICM. Si occupa anche di produzione.
