E' nato a Rockeford, ma ha origini irlandesi. Suo fratello Declan è un operatore cinematografico famoso. Comincia a recitare a 19 anni. E' nella lista "Promising New Actors of 1986" di John Willis' Screen World. Laureato alla DePaul University / Goodman Theater B.F.A. programma di recitazione.Tra le sue interpretazioni ricordiamo quella in Cercasi Susan disperatamente.
